Why it's in the Cabin

This book puts together Weil's and Bespaloff's analyses of the Illiad, both written during the Second World War, providing a devastatingly relevant and intellectually rich commentary on the nature of war, humanity, and the timeless wisdom contained within Homer's epic, all viewed through the lens of two brilliant minds confronting the horrors of their own contemporary conflict.

Author

Simone Weil

An enigmatic French philosopher, mystic, and political activist whose brief life was marked by an intense engagement with human suffering and the pursuit of truth. Renouncing a comfortable academic career, she worked in factories, volunteered in the Spanish Civil War, and refused sufficient food during wartime to share in the privations of others, embodying her deep commitment to solidarity with the oppressed. Her posthumously published writings, characterised by their intellectual rigor and spiritual intensity, explore themes of attention, affliction, justice, labor, the nature of evil, and a radical critique of power and political parties, leaving behind a unique and challenging body of thought that continues to influence philosophy, theology, and political theory.
