Why it's in the Cabin
This is the first British edition of a cult classic, published by Marion Boyars, one of the first women publishers in the 20th century. It created endless scholarship around sex, eroticism, pornography, violence and perversion, and the aesthetics around it, as evidenced by the essays by Susan Sontag and Roland Barthes included. It is challenging and boundary pushing in its unconstrained exploration of desire, and therefore both difficult and extremely rewarding.

Author
Georges Bataille
Bataille's project was not only aesthetic but philosophical and political. His commitment to undo traditional values in literature, and seriously explore themes way beyond the limits of what was considered acceptable in his time, and even now, make him one of the most disruptive and radical figures in the history of literature.
