It is a novella that explores themes of fatalism, heightened consciousness, and the burden of prescience through its protagonist, Latimer, who is cursed with the ability to foresee future events and discern others' innermost thoughts. Part of the Virago Modern Classics series, a politically important publishing project which brought back into print the work of forgotten and overlooked women writers, and thus participating in the creation of women’s literary tradition.
