Why it's in the Cabin
This copy is a Book of the Month Club edition of The Bluest Eye, which uses the sheets of the third edition with a reissued dust jacket. Likely from 1973, as it mentions Sula, published in the that year. A scarce early printing. Morrison’s debut novel confronts the concept of colonisation of the mind through Pecola Breedlove’s heartbreaking wish for blue eyes. Morrison’s poetic, unflinching language and layered narrative structure illuminate the intersections of race, gender, and self-worth.

Author
Toni Morrison
Toni Morrison became a giant of American literature without ever compromising on her vision and commitment to write about black lives in their multiplicity. She was constantly asked by interviewers if she would ever stop writing about race, or start writing about white people. She always refused. She said: "I spent my entire writing life trying to make sure that the white gaze was not the dominant gaze".
