First edition, small press. Unicorn Bookshop, Dyfed (Wales), 1976. Staple-bound, 52 pp. Blue wrappers mostly clean and neat. Owner signature on back of cover and note on the first page: "Bill Butler made up a lot of Jack in this book!". First three pages are annotated, corrected, and passages crossed over. No other faults.

Why it's in the Cabin

Unauthorised publication of Kerouac’s prose poem, composed through years of midnight journaling, which first appeared in Big Table Magazine, Number One, Spring 1959. Published by Bill Butler, American writer and owner of the Unicorn Bookshop in Brighton. Butler was a gay man who lived, what was called at the time, an alternative lifestyle, and endured an obscenity trial after taking on the publication of J.G. Ballard's Why I Want to Fuck Ronald Reagan (1958). He published Old Angel Midnight after the bookshop closed and he moved to Wales. This copy, annotated by an unknown person, who implies that part of the text is Butler's fabrication, is a curious example of independent radical publishing, and part of Butler's legacy.
