Erica Marx

Scarce fine press anthology, signed by Erica Marx. The Hand and Flower Press, Aldington, 1951. Hardcover, 294pp. Half green cloth and gray boards, extraordinarily sound and tight with some slight bumping on corners and some slight rubbing on spine ends. Scattered spots on book edge. An extremely scarce hardcover anthology of the 1951 the first series of "Poems in Pamphlet", The Hand and Flower Press' publication series, printing previously unpublished poets: Gwyneth Anderson, Robert Waller, Charles Tomlinson, Peter Russell, John Alden, Charles Higham, Arthur Constance, Rob Lyle, Charles Causley, John O'Hare, Thomas Blackburn. Robert Manfred. Inscribed by the editor: "To Jane Turner from Erica Marx" in blue ink on the half title page. Erica Marx (1909-1969), niece of Karl Marx, led an independent publishing practice largely of previously unpublished poetry with The Hand & Flower Press, founded in 1940. Erica Marx was the partner of Austrian-Argentinian painter Mariette Lydis, with whom she spent the final years of her life in Argentina, after they fled the rise of Nazism in Europe.
